The Uruguayan newspaper, El País, published a report where it analyses the country’s labor market during 2016.
The article describes the variations of the employment and unemployment rate per department, using as a source data from the most recent edition of the Continuous Household Survey developed by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
On a national level, the unemployment rate among men dropped to 6.5%, while among women the situation was worse, as the unemployment rate rose to 9.4%.
In addition, INE’s survey describes the working conditions of Uruguayans during 2016.
Almost two out of ten (19.6%) workers said they did not made pension contributions. Men account for 11.1% of this figure, while women account for the remaining 8.5%. Informal workers showed a similar performance in 2016 than in 2015, when the informality rate reached 19.9% of workers.
In addition, data provides information regarding the category of workers during 2016. Around 56.8% of workers in the country are in the private sector, while 15% work in the public sector.
Close to 20.3% of workers are independent and have a business or investment. Only 2.6% are independent workers and have no business nor investment. Furthermore, 4.1% own their business.
According to INE’s information, last year 29.6% of the population older than 14 years old said they are inactive (1,030,146 persons). Most of them (657,762) are women, while men reached 372,384.
