Technologies such as 3D printing, nanosatellites and urban mobility solutions gather experts, entrepreneurs and academics at EmTech, the conference organised by the magazine MIT Technology Review in Medellin, Colombia.

EmTech (Emerging Technologies) which, according to the organisers, has been for over a decade the most important meeting point for the experts of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is developed for the third time in Colombia. The event was developed in this country in 2012, in its’ first Latin American version.

“MIT Technology Review is a promoter of innovation, we are interested in establishing a dialogue and introducing stories about emerging technologies”, explained during a press conference Kathleen Kennedy, president of the magazine and of the MIT Enterprise Forum.

She pointed out that emerging technologies are those that “shall have an impact on society and on the way we work”.

Kennedy highlighted that Latin America “is growing very quickly”, particularly Colombia, which she described as a case of “success”.

She stated that the country has “very strong” policies that facilitate the creation of new technologies, such as the Vive Digital program that the government launched in 2010 to expand internet Access and develop an environment for digital issues.

Kennedy also mentioned the “growing” talent Colombia and its’ universities have.

“Put all together, these things will help young innovative people, entrepreneurs and companies to create very strong economic growth in the long term”, she claimed.

The secretary of Economic Development of the Medellin city hall, Tomas Mejia, referred to the “transformation” the city has gone through during the past few years, which led to it been considered the most innovative city in 2013.

Mejia believes that with a platform such as EmTech “Medellin goes through and the world goes through Medellin”.

Meanwhile, director of Forward Planning of Ruta N Corporation, Elkin Echeverry, described EmTech as a “very powerful gathering place” that allows “connecting Medellin to the world” and “Colombia to the world”.

During the meeting a report about the ten technologies that according to the MIT Technology Review “will change the market and the way we live and work”.

In addition, the “Colombia 2015 Innovative awards for people under 35 years old″ will be delivered.
