BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye announced an alliance that to make smart self-driving vehicles become a reality before 2021.
Mobileye is a firm that specializes in automatic learning technologies.
BMW committed to develop the necessary systems and Solutions for completely automatized driving and to add these technologies in series production before 2021.
The BMW iNEXT model will be the base to create a fleet of totally autonomous vehicles.
The three companies assured that automatized driving technologies will make travelling safer and easier, going through different levels: “driving” without handling the wheel, moving the eyes away from the driveway, engaging in entertainment or work, and having no human driver.
To achieve this goal, an industry standard will be developed and an open platform of autonomous driving will be available for multiple providers of cars and other segments.
In the short-term, driving tests with a highly automatized prototype (HAD) are expected, and the platform should be extended to fleets with extended autonomous tests. Mobileye detection technologies will be used. These technologies have the capacity of understanding the situation using a single camera, which will have the EyeQ 5 processor of the company. In addition, Mobileye’s Road Experience Management (REM) technology will provide the exact location in real time and shape the scene to enable completely autonomous driving.
Together, the firms will develop the algorithms to be applied in the computer platforms of Intel. This company will provide a wide range of technology to grant processing capacity and connect thousands of millions of smart devices, including cars.
To manage the complex workloads needed for autonomous vehicles in urban environments, Intel will provide calculus power through Atom and Xeon processors, and offer a total number of 100 teraflops of efficient processing without needing to re-code.
