Crowdfunding is the trend of the moment. According to The Crowdfunding Industry Report, last year these platforms moved up to USD 4,230 million. A figure that makes it clear that this is way more than a simple fashion trend.
In this article you will find a list of the most famous platforms that can help you with your startup. Nevertheless, take into account that these platforms tend to be different and not all of them adapt to every project.
Kickstarter
This is the largest platform, based on the volume of projects and resources. This web has thousands of active users who finance projects every day. However, it only accepts projects from people who permanently live in the United States, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland or Norway. Nonetheless, it has expanded the number of countries allowed.
Currently, a large variety of different projects are financed through this platform, but the most successful ones are design products (physical innovative objects), and games (board and digital games).
Indiegogo
It is the second largest platform (also American). The difference is that with this platform you can create a campaign without having any residence requisites. In addition, it allows social or charitable causes, and enables the creation of fixed or flexible projects. The fixed model is just like Kickstarter’s model (you get the money if you reach the financing goal), while in the flexible model, you get the money either if you get to the goal or not. This can be a double-edged sword, and you must carefully study whether you will develop your project even if you do not reach your goal, as you need to pay collaborators anyway.
Ulule
It is the European leader. It has successfully financed over six thousand projects and collected over 23 million euros.
One of the good qualities of this platform is that you create your project in one of the languages that it has (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese), and then, Ulule employees translate into the other five languages. Therefore, if you want your project to have international visibility, this is one of your best options.
The collection system is with the method “all or nothing”, so you must reach the financing goal to get the money.
Lanzanos
It is similar to Kickstarter, for tangible products. It was founded in 2010 and has a high success rate. In this platform, before your projects goes to the collection phase, it has to receive 100 votes of different people, in a sort of preliminary filter.
GoFundMe
It is the main crowdfunding website for social and charitable causes. From paying for a medical treatment for a person or animal, to burial expenditures, weddings, rebuilding destroyed houses, and a long etcetera. If you need to finance a particular or charitable cause, this might be the proper website for it. It accepts campaigns from several countries, but not from Latin America.
Idea.me
It is the leading platform in Latin America, mostly focused in social, cultural campaigns and creative ideas. It accepts currency from Chile, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay and USA dollars. Just like Indigogo, you can choose between the all or nothing model or the everything helps model. Maybe, the most negative aspect of this platform is the percentage it gets, which varies according to the supplier of online payment between 13% and 17%, and Ideame gets 10%.
