The Canadian Think Tank, Fraser, develops an index about the most attractive jurisdictions for mining investments.

The main producer of copper of the world is located in our region. However, it is not among the best ranked for mining investors.

According to the report, which was developed based on surveys destined to executives of mining companies during 2015, Chile is number 11 among 109 locations. In 2014 it was among the Top 10, placed 9th in 122 jurisdictions.

The attractiveness of investment index combines the perception over public policies (40%) and the mining resources of the district (60%).

2013 was the best year for Chile, as it was number 4 among 112 jurisdictions. Clearly, the progressive fall of the country under the investors’ perspective is an issue to be addressed by the South American country.

Australia, Canada and the United States have the best investments’ districts. Ireland and Finland are also positively regarded among investors.

Even though Chile has being falling back in the ranking, it still is the leader in Latin America. Peru is the second best in a regional level (number 36). Nevertheless, the country also has to review the cause of its deep fall-back (10 positions in a year).

Mexico lost the second place it used to have in the region to Peru, when falling down 12 positions in 12 months. It is now ranked number 37 in the global ranking.

The other locations of the region are ranked as follows: Colombia (55), Brazil (56), Nicaragua (65), Salta in Argentina (71), Panama (74), San Juan in Argentina (75) and Dominican Republic (81).

Several Argentinian jurisdictions analysed by the Fraser Institute turned out to be the worst qualified.

The province La Rioja bet Venezuela as the least attractive district for mining investment. Meanwhile, Chubut, Mendoza and Rio Negro, are also among the ten least attractive destinations for mining exploration companies. An issue to be analysed and revised by the new Argentinian administration.
