IBM and the MIT announced a new collaboration that seeks to unlock the artificial intelligence potential.

IBM will invest USD 240 million to create the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, a 10 years collaboration project with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The goal is to promote scientific achievements in the Artificial Intelligence field.

The new lab will work on “advancing in the development of hardware, software and smart algorithms; increase the impact of artificial technology on industries such as healthcare and cybersecurity; and explore the ethic and economic implications of artificial intelligence in society”.

The MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab is one of the largest collaboration projects between the university and the private sector in the field of AI to this date. It shall gather over 100 scientists, professors and students.

The agreement has the goal of “pushing the limits of science and technology in artificial intelligence” in the following areas:

  • Artificial intelligence algorithms
  • Artificial intelligence physics
  • Applicants of AI to the industries
  • Promoting shared prosperity through the use of AI.

In addition, the project aims at encouraging MIT professors and students to create companies to commercialize the inventions and technologies developed in the lab.

“Real scientific advances are often the result of a mindset inspire don a new concept of research teams. The combined talent of IBM and the MIT will bring a formidable strength to a field with surprising potential to move forward in terms of knowledge and help solve important challenges”, said MIT’s president, L. Rafael Reif.

Both, the MIT and IBM are pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence. The MIT claims that the term “artificial intelligence” was developed and became popular by its researchers in the 1950’s. While IBM has explored the application of AI to several industries for over 20 years.
