The World Economic Forum published 24 graphs that show the dramatic acceleration of human impact on social and environmental processes.
These graphs -12 on socio-economic aspects and 12 on environmental aspects-, illustrate the main trends that shape the global context in which world leaders operate.
Through these graphs world’s population growth trends may be observed. An interesting fact is that, after of years of acceleration since the 1950’s, the world’s population is becoming stable as the amount of children has stopped growing globally. Furthermore, another graph shows how over 50% of the global population live in cities, reflecting a demographic shift with a deep economic, social and environmental impact.
Furthermore, the graphs show that, even though emerging economies are becoming the engine of global production, the main part of economic activity and consumption is still focused in developed economies.
Moreover, the graphs illustrate how the use of natural resources –mainly water and primary energies- increased since the Industrial Revolution and the impact it has had on the environment – pollution, deforestation, over-exploitation of natural resources, etc.-.
This publication brings light on how important it is for world leaders to address these pressing matters urgently, in order to face the challenge and enhance the development of greener and more inclusive economies.
