Fred van Haasteren – former President of the World Employment Confederation – defended last week with great success his thesis on “Decent Flexibility” and the role of ILO Convention 181 in gaining acceptant for temporary agency work.

During a ceremony held at the University of Leiden (Netherlands), van Haasteren explained how debate at the ILO level contributed to address the challenges raised by the development of temporary agency work and how the adoption of Convention n°181 on private employment agencies provided regulatory guidelines to tackle these issues.

In his thesis, van Haasteren goes through several key concepts of the world of work, such as decent work, the multi-dimensional approach to precarious work, job security and employment protection, employment creation, etc.

You will find attached an English summary of his thesis (written in Dutch).
