The Finnish education system is among the best of the world. The country is among the top 10 countries in the education evaluation rankings. However, the local authorities do not want to settle with what they have achieved, and have decided to make a real revolution of the school system.

The public servants want to cancel every school subject: there will no longer be physics, mathematics, literature, history, and geography classes.

Marjo Kyllonen, Head of the Department of Education in Helsinki, explains these changes: “there are schools where they teach using the old methods, which used to work back in the 1900s. However, the current needs have changed and we must create something adequate for the 21st century.”

Instead of separate subjects, the students will study events and phenomenon in a multidisciplinary way. For instance, the Second World War will approached using history, geography and mathematics. And in the course “Work in the Coffee Shop”, the students will be learn complex knowledge in economics, English and communication skills.

This system can be applied to every senior students, older than 16 years old. According to the idea, the students will have to choose a topic or phenomenon to study, using their notions about how useful it is for life. Consequently, teenagers will no longer study complete courses of physics or chemistry, or wonder what are they studying these things for, or why do they need to learn this.

The traditional structure of “student-teacher” will also change. Students will no longer seat at desks and wait impatiently until they have to give a lesson. Instead of that, they will work in small teams and explains problems.

The Finnish education system promotes team work. Therefore, teachers will also be affected by changes in the way of working. The school reform will demand more interaction among teachers from different subjects. Around 70% of teachers in Helsinki have already been prepared to present the information in this way and will receive a salary increase.

The system will be completely renewed by 2020.
