Despite the fact that there have always been migrants in Chile, the fact of them working in national companies has only become an issue during the past few years.
As a matter of fact, a few weeks ago, Piñera’s administration suggested expanding up to 30% the maximum limit to hire foreign workers in the country’s companies.
Even though this initiative was welcomed by certain business associations, not every businessman is aware of the impact such change might have.
Andrés Cardemil, director of HumanNet Consultores, provides insight on the contributions that come from including foreign workers in companies in Chile.
- Global vision.“Professionals who come from abroad have a wider vision on the world, markets, and businesses, plus adaptability, which enable a company to promote creativity and innovation”, says Cardemil. In most cases, this is a positive outcome, as it improves the culture of an organization and expands the existing “know how”.
- International experience. The fact of having worked abroad, in a cosmopolitan and multiethnic environment, enables a person to become more tolerant towards diversity and add more value to his/her professional performance, generating greater productivity levels, and promoting a company’s success.
- Commitment and responsibility. Due to the fact that they are in another country and, in certain cases, far away from their family, foreign workers tend to be more committed towards their job and show higher levels of responsibility.
- Academic training. Foreign talent usually has been trained as a professional or technician in institutions with international prestige, which enables them to handle tools and methods that do not only benefit the organization, but also their colleagues.
- Second language. A large share of foreign professional master a second language, which enables a company to have better prepared talent to connect to the world and to different markets.
- “No one is a prophet in their own country”. An old and popular saying, but still quite accurate. Professionals who migrate tend to unleash their full talent in a new labour market that welcomes them. As they live in a place that has little to do with their past, it is a chance to start all over again, which enables them to feel at liberty to dare and innovate.
