Buenos Aires is the best city in Latin America to be an exchange students, according to the QS raking Best Student Cities, released a few days ago by the analysts of international superior education of QS Quacquarelli Symonds. Even though it fell 10 positions when compared to the 2016 ranking, it still is the leader in the region, beating the other six Latin American cities included in the survey.
The English based company specialized in providing information on university education on a global level is also known for being the author of the QS World University Ranking, where the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) was number 85 in 2016, the highest position for a university in the region.
This time, what was under evaluation was the city that hosts international university students, using six different indicators: desirability, ranking, mix of students, employers activity, life costs, and, for the first time, the opinion of students. To be considered for the survey, the cities had to have over 250,000 inhabitants and at least two universities evaluated by QS.
During this fifth edition, Paris was replaced for the first time ever from the top position by Montreal, one of the two Canadian cities in the top 10, which was completed with Vancouver, and followed by Toronto in the 11th place. In America, there were 4 other North American cities that were above Buenos Aires: Boston (8), New York (19), San Francisco (28) and Washington DC (37). The top five cities in the global ranking were Montreal, Paris, London, Seoul, and Melbourne.
Buenos Aires had its best score in the category that measures the quality of the university offers in the city, while its weakest points were the “desirability”, a mix of attractiveness a life quality (position 79), and life cost, its worst feature, in which it felt to position 87.
The survey highlighted the dynamism of the city and the increase of the employment opportunities and a rise of employment opportunities for international students. According to QS analysts, the quality of the graduate professionals of the city is well-known in Latin America, a fact that impacts on the category employers’ activity of the index.
The ranking’s summary points out that there are nine evaluated universities in the city and it particularly mentions UBA as the best placed university in the region. It also highlights the lifestyle, night life, food and weather of the city.
