Rio de Janeiro’s Samba Schools Parade is billed as the greatest show on earth, but Carnival is also a multimillion dollar business that generates thousands of jobs and injects big money into the local economy, reports cntv.cn.
The elite samba schools invest between USD 3.5 million and USD 7 million each, generating employment throughout the year. An estimated 250,000 temporary jobs have been created this year alone.
According to official estimates, this year’s Carnival will generate almost USD 1 billion, a +10% increase from last year. Most of the revenue will come from some 900,000 tourists, who will outnumber the number of visitors expected in Rio for this year’s football World Cup.
Antonio Pedro Figueira De Mello, Rio’s tourism secretary, said: “Carnival is a special moment for the city, the World Cup has logistics that depend on ticket sales, but Carnival, besides the tickets for the parade, Carnival takes place all over the city.”
