The cross between the variables Education and Employment is of relevant importance. The employability, the actions against informality and the promotion of non-traditional ways to work are the key to solve the scourge of youth unemployment

We are coming to the end of year with an already finished electoral presidential process and starting a new year which will be the beginning of a period in which many countries of the region will be ready to listen to proposals of presidential candidates.
When the countries prepared themselves to start a presidential succession period, one can expect that the candidates would work in a complex process together with their technical teams. The result of the work is the number of proposals to present to the electorate. There´s no doubt that it is a transcendent job.
Several times, common citizens are asked what they would do if they were president, what then first regulation would be and about what issues they would care most.
In this hypothetical exercise, I suppose I would work on variables such us Education, Employment, Health, security, Justice and Economy. It is only common sense that nobody could think of becoming president candidate without having a diagnostic and a clear statement of each variable in the whole geography of the country together with a strategic plan with concrete objectives in each of the fields.
Obviously the great challenge takes place when one cross the variables, understanding that it is in the cross of those variables where the quality of life of citizens gets better and where the democracy really makes sense as a system of government.
Personally, I found a crucial and strategic relevance in the cross of two variables: Education and Employment.
Is there connection between the Education system and the productive system? Is the gap between the skills given by the Education system and the ones demanded by the labor market too big? Is there a systematic plan to make that gap smaller? Are all the sectors involved in the creation of decent work for the youth?
The Pope Francis made public a few days ago, how worried he was about “labor insertion”
The concept of employability is the one which underlies in the cross of the variables. It is also the one which has direct impact in the dilemma of youth employment/unemployment.
It is necessary to work on tripartite initiatives based on social dialogue which allow developing training for employment programs based on demand. The organizations require skills that the formal and traditional education system is not producing.
Governments, employers, workers, we all have the challenge and obligation to grow up when it comes to employability so as to consolidate competitive and inclusive economies.
There is no doubt that the current world of employment is completely different of the one of the first half of the last century. The understanding of the dynamics of the modern labor market is crucial to be able to grow. The idea is being able to modernize, looking after all the worker´s rights and taking into consideration all companies ‘needs.
It would be fantastic to listen to proposals about employability in each of the countries which make up our Latin America. The development of the appropriate skills is essential to reduce inequalities and to promote growth. Suitable skills change lives and boost economies. South Korea changed from poor to rich in only 30 years, focusing on this issue. Without these skills, people remain away from society, companies lose competitiveness, economies downturn and politics seem to lose sense.
It is high time we worked hard in the construction of formal, dynamic and inclusive labor markets, focusing on the correct administration of transitions and promoting non- traditional ways to work through appropriate regulations which allow the creation of more decent work for more people.
In this 2014, in which Latin America will be host of the World Cup once more, informality and the lack of demand oriented skills would be the most important rivals to beat.
