According to the Peruvian National Institute of Statistics (INEI), during the quarter January-February-March of 2018, the employed population above 45 years old in Lima grew 7.5% in comparison to the same quarter in 2017. In other words, 92,100 jobs were created.

The INEI reported the employed population between 25 to 44 years old decreased 1.6% (40,900) and around 3.7% among youth below 25 years old (36,000 people).

The total employed population in Lima grew slightly, 0.3% (15,200 people) during the first quarter of the year, reaching 4,800,300 persons.

The INEI stated that the female employed population increased 1.4% (29,300 women), while the male employed population decreased 0.5% (14,100 men).

As regards age groups, the female employed population grew mostly among those who are older than 45 years old (42,200 women), followed by women younger than 25 years old (14,000 women). Women aged 25 to 44 years old showed a 2.3% decrease (26,900 women).

As regards education level, there was a 6.3% increase of employment among people with primary education or lower level, who are mostly women working in small shops. In addition, a 1% increase was registered among people with secondary education. Most of them were men who work in construction.

Population with a university degree experience a -2.1% decrease, due to the lower demand of professionals (mainly industrial and mechanical engineers, physicians, dentists, economists, geologists, and statistical and financial professionals, among others. Technicians also underwent a decrease of 0.7%, given the smaller demand of administration technicians, mechanical workers, gas fitters, and welders.

Employed population in construction grew 3.3% (10,600 people), due to the higher demand of workers in constructions and civil engineering projects. In the services sector it grew 0.9% (23,200 people), mostly due to the higher demand of staff in restaurants and bars, auxiliary financial intermediation tasks, and security. In the commerce sector, employment grew 0.3% (3,400 people), while it showed a -2.2% decrease (14,700 people) in manufacture.

The unemployment rate in Lima was 8.1%. Around 420,900 people are actively looking for a job. About 47.8% (201,300) of unemployed people are men, and 52.2% (219,600) are women.

Female unemployment rate was 9.2%, 2.1% higher than male unemployment rate (7.1%).
