Antonio Guterres was appointed yesterday, October 13th, by the General Assembly, as the next Secretary General of the United Nations. Guterres will take the position starting on January 1st 2017 until December 31st 2021.

The Assembly highlighted the appointment as a historical one, despite the voices that asked for a woman to take the highest global role in diplomacy, as his election was guided by the principles of transparency and inclusion.

Current Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, cherished the decision of the Member States, and pointed out the solidary spirit and political experience of Guterres, as essential features for the new appointment. Guterres expressed his gratitude to the Latin American and the Caribbean Group (GRULAC) for its support on his candidature.
