Spain’s former president, Felipe Gonzalez, said that the key will lay in the concept of employability. Adaptation to change and flexibility were present in the XX Encounter of the Circle of Montevideo, which is taking place in Asunción, Paraguay.

“We tend to associate the idea of employment to a good professional training for a job that shall last a lifetime, if possible. That will no longer happen, as flexible and continuous training and education are needed in order to enjoy employability. And in order to have a higher level of employability we will need to adapt to different kinds of jobs throughout our life, with different ways of professional formation”, said Felipe Gonzales in his lecture during the XX Encounter of the Circle of Montevideo that developed in Asunción.

“Professionals get their degrees, and two years later the knowledge they gained while studying become outdated” he said. Gonzalez pointed out that universities must go through a revolution. He assured that more practice is needed so that professionals learn to apply their knowledge either dependently of independently.

It is necessary to grant access to labour for young people in order to take advantage of the demographic bonus, because as countries develop they face problems of developing countries but also problems of developed societies, he added.

Gonzalez thinks that social equity is based in re-distribution, education and health, regardless the political and ideological model and the strategy with which it is carried out. He assured that it is necessary to redistribute those factors because if not social movements such as the ones in Brazil are generated. Groups of people that used not to be considered by the system and that have currently gained access to a home, a job and demand good quality education for their children.

About this, former Brazilian president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, explained that this occurs because the feeling of social welfare is no longer related to gaining access to a job and education, but to finding a job with dignity and high quality education. When every child is at school, people request quality.
