According to the Global Innovation Index no Latin American countries could make it among the Top 20. The region faces major challenges.

In a global context where the economy seems to be turning orange and creativity and innovation are worth billions of dollars, Latin American countries still face major challenges.

There is not a single Latin American country among the Top 20 nations of the Global Innovation Index, or among the emerging countries in the ranking.

When looking into the Latin American and the Caribbean data, three countries can be seen as the clear leaders (even though the fall way behind the global elite). Chile is the regional leader, but is no. 47 in the global ranking; it is followed by Costa Rica (no. 54), and Mexico (no. 56).

Argentina is no. 80. However, it is properly regarded among innovation experts. The country has a good platform to grow and its greatest strength is Human Capital, dimension of the ranking where the country is no. 51.

The Global Innovation Index classifies 126 economies based on 80 variables, including intellectual property rights applications index, mobile apps development, expenses on education, and technical and scientific papers.

The Top 10 countries are: Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Singapore, United States, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Ireland.

China is no. 17 in the ranking, which is a major advance for an economy that is undergoing a process of fast transformations, with public policies that prioritize research and development.

In addition, it is a warning sign for the USA, which has drop one position when compared to the 2017 Index. Israel was the country that made the most important advances, and it is also a model for certain countries in the region, such as Argentina, in terms of entrepreneurship.
