According to the last survey of Fundación Forge, around 84% of Peruvians aged from 18 to 24 years old said that their first job was developed under informal conditions.
About 56% of the survey respondents believes that the lack of working experience is a major factor when applying for a formal job, 22% believe that the education level is a barrier, and 11% thinks that age is a major drawback.
In addition, 94% of the survey respondents say they know the difference between a formal and an informal job.
As regards the new bill that states that technical students must undergo a non-paid training experience, 80% think that it would have a positive impact on the pursuit for a formal job.
Clearly, initiatives such as the one developed by Fundación Forge are key to ensure the access to formal employment, while reducing the decent work deficit in the country.
Peru urgently needs to reduce its informality rates, particularly among young people. The ratification of ILO Convention 181 would enable the public employment service to work together with private employment services, in a partnership aimed at having a major economic and social impact.
