During Argentina’s presidency, the future of work is one of the main topics of the G20, and from February 20 to 22, the first meeting of the Employment Working Group.
Delegations from Argentina, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, South Korea, USA, Spain, France, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Holland, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and the European Union. And representatives from the Association of South East Asia Nations, the Caribbean Community, the Latin America Development Bank, the International Labour Organization, the IMF, the OECD, and the World Bank.
The attendance of representatives from Labour 20 (trade unions), Business 20, Think 20 (Think Tanks), Youth 20 (youth), Women 20 (gender).
One of the key topics of the agenda will be “promotion of labour formalization and decent work”. There will be three debates on this topic, which shall analyse the factors and impacts of the new forms of employment, possible policies to address “decent work deficits”, and how to promote the formal employment market in the future.
In addition, new business models in the digital economy will be analysed, and “effective measures” to eliminate child labour, forced labour, and human trafficking.
Other topics include: “Disability at work”, and “gender equity”, being the latter the common thread of the entire G20.
After this meeting, the Employment Working Group will meet again on June 11 and 12, and on September 3 to 5. And the G20 summit on this topic will take place on September 6 and 7.
The Employment Working Group is a priority for the presidency of the G20 of Mauricio Macri. The President highlighted the “Future of Work” as the main topic, focused on preventing technological changes from leading to exclusion, a discussion which is taking place in developed countries.
