Brainstorming is probably the best known method to generate new ideas, but creativity can be exploited using other tools.

Based on a report developed by HubSpot, we are going to explore alternative tools to the famous brainstorming:

The storyboarding method

It is a very simple and effective exercise. Each persona must write down individual ideas (not necessarily complete or developed ideas) on post-its. Then, together, they must put the ideas in order in a board or table.

The forced connections method

This tool can be used both, individually and in groups. Writing on a board two lists of totally unconnected objects. Chose two or more objects and try to find a way to link them. It is an ideal exercise to solve creative knots.

The brain-writing method

In this group exercise, participants are requested to write their (unelaborated) ideas on a piece of paper, to solve a problem. Then, every piece of paper go from hand to hand and are read paying close attention by every participant of the group, who must complete the initial idea with their own ideas. In order to make sure that every idea is considered, and preventing one person to become the leading voice, as it usually happens in brainstorming sessions.

The zero draft method

Commonly used by writers. Picking a topic, writing everything we know about it, writing down what we want or need to learn about, reflect on the motives for which the topic at hand is important, and adding absolutely every idea that comes to our mind.

The S.C.A.M.P.E.R. method

The S.C.A.M.P.E.R. method is a way to approach the ideas laid on the table from different perspectives in order to enrich them. It is about substituting (S), combining (C), adapting (A), modify (M), eliminate (E) and reorganize (R) previously discussed ideas.

The method of questioning assumptions

Assumptions, which we sometimes consider to be truthful, can damage creativity. Therefore, it is useful to make a list of every assumption linked to the project and try to question them one by one.

The wishes method

It is about thinking, with no restrictions at all, the most unthinkable solutions to solve a problem. Then, you must choose the best wishes, debate in detail and polish them to turn them into realistic ideas.

The alter ego method

This is the exercise in which you put in other people’s shoes to solve the problems ahead. We must get under the skin of really suitable people, or of completely unsuitable people to explore new points of view on a problem.

The group sketching method

Participants must draw on a piece of paper an image which is directly linked to the problem to be solved. Then, the drawings go from hand to hand and participants must complete them with their own visual ideas. The goal is the see things from different perspectives.

The method of the six thinking hats

This method already has several years. It was developed by the psychologist Edward de Bono in 1985. Participants must take six different roles (logic, optimism, negativity, emotion, creativity, and leading) to debate about a problem.

Every method is valid and can be combined. There are no magic recipes. So, start creating!
