A report developed by Christian Guijosa for the Observatory of Education Innovation of the Tec of Monterrey refers to Station 1.

A former dean of the postgraduate school of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), inaugurated a new type of university with no classrooms, departments, or specializations.

Station1 is a nonprofit organization that has the goal of making superior education evolve with a unique model, which is opposite to the traditional pillars of the university.

Christine Ortiz, presented her resignation to her job as dean in the MIT in order to pursue something more transcendent and with greater purpose: funding a revolutionary university.

Station1 defines itself as an open door education experience that seeks to educate citizens in science and technology to have an impact in our shared future.

Station1 Model

  • Learning based on projects is the central structure of Station 1; the students learn through research and experimentation. Students have 24/7 access to the labs to make their ideas come true. The virtual self-directed learning method is combined with classroom learning, to create new knowledge, technologies, materials, devices and designs with positive social impact.
  • Station1 has the goal of developing social innovation in a holistic framework, and promote life-long learning. The model Station1 seeks to be multidisciplinary, combining history, science social studies and technologies, equity, social innovation, and leadership development, linked to emerging fields in science and technology.
  • Station1 will try to guarantee the participation of students from different origins. Its goal is to embrace cultural, social, and disciplinary differences, in order to unite people from all over the world in an interconnected community that uses science and technology to promote equity, sustainability, peace, and prosperity.

Christine Ortiz plans for Station1 to be recognized as a university in four years top, and to build a global campus network. Interested students can start applying for the first summer program, to be developed in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
