Mexico has 13.7 million freelancers, and only 3% of them have a coworking space.

According to the National Survey of Employment and Occupation, developed by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the number of freelance workers grew 2.1% in Mexico during the second semester of 2016 compared to the same period in 2015.

A report developed by Citrix states that by 2020, 80% of the working time will be spent in non-conventional places, such as coworking spaces, customers and suppliers’ officers, houses and coffee shops.

“It is a trend in the way of working and almost a demand millennials and new generations make”, says Cati Cerda, General Director of Regus in an interview with Forbes Mexico.

The concept of coworking was born with this generation, which is interested in interactions and flexible ways to develop labour activities.

“We cannot deny that the way of working is evolving and people tend to interact more”, acknowledges Cerda.

One of the main problems with coworking spaces is the lack of room for people with a quieter profile, who need to isolate and focus. And we are talking about a country were six out of ten freelancers visualize developing their own business.

Taking these needs into account, Regus will launch Spaces, the coworking platform developed for freelance workers in Mexico City.

Spaces was born in Amsterdam during 2006 and currently operates in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Mexico’s offices will open together with Japan and Singapore, reaching a total number of 21 operational centres.

On a global level, this platform has customers such as Uber, Twitter and Chanel, and provides flexible solutions that adapt to any kind of business, not just freelancers or startups.

The monthly membership fee will be USD 200 per person and the facilities have a 100 megabytes bandwidth.

Cerda does not rule out opening more Spaces’ locations in cities such as Monterrey and Guadalajara in 2017.

Regus has presence in four cities in Mexico: 27 offices in Mexico City, 4 in Guadalajara, 2 in Monterrey and 1 in Puebla, with over 5.000 work stations.
