Manpower Group released a report called “Millennial Careers: 2020 vision”, which provides insight about what millennials want and expect from their jobs.
A very interesting fact is that the report knocks down the popular belief of millennials being a lazy and opportunistic generation. Actually, millennials work harder and expect to have longer working lives than previous generations. Around 70% of them work more than 40 hours a week and almost 25% work more than 50 hours per week.
Furthermore, given the chance, they will move on and move up, but more often than not they expect to advance with the same employer. They want new development opportunities and challenges with their current employers, and not new employers. This means that employers must foster, nurture and reward millennials desire for continuous learning.
When looking for a new job they prioritize money, security and time off. Nevertheless, instead of betting on one job for their life, they bet on continuous learning to update and develop skills and remain employable.
Manpower Group experts state that Career Waves are replacing Career Ladders. Knowing that retirement is a long way down the road, most millennials expect to have significant breaks during their working lives. There are gender differences in terms of what they plan to do with their spare time. Women tend to prefer activities where they care for other people, while men expect to spend time on themselves.
