During an interview with the Uruguayan media Subrayado, Fabio Bertranou, Southern Cone Director of the International Labour Organization, said demographic changes have made it mandatory for Uruguay to change its’ pension system.

A longer life expectancy urges several countries to discuss pension system reforms, and Uruguay is no exception.

“Countries such as the United States and Germany, for instance, have implemented a gradual mechanism, so young people just entering the labour market already know they will retire at an older age, but those who have a few years left are added a smaller number of years”, explained Bertranou.

“Clearly, every security system must be adjusted, and such adjustments must not be postponed. Therefore, it is important to have a broad and inclusive debate on this issue”, finished Bertranou.
