Even though both, Chile and Argentina, held high expectations for the arrival of Amazon, the e-commerce giant has announced that it shall be opening a data center in Colombia, employing around 600 people.

This data center is expected to be opened in October, and will provide assistance to customers in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.

This way, Amazon expands its presence in the region. It settled in Brazil back in 2012 selling just books. By the ends of last year, it finally expanded its services supply.

Amazon’s arrival is a major challenge for MercadoLibre, the Argentinian unicorn that is the current regional leader in the industry.

During the past few months there was the rumor that Amazon intended to set a big data center either in Chile or Argentina. Many believe that the data center will give way to the process of implementing the business as it already is in Europe and the United States.
