LinkedIn currently has 500 million users from 200 countries. And it continues to grow: the platform has two new members per second and is becoming the main professional network on a global level.
If you do not want to be just one more among millions, here we share a few tips to enhance your LinkedIn profile, stand out and develop your network.
Underpin basic concepts: Your URL should include your name and be personalized. Your headline has to be original. Many people use a headline that simply describes their job in a company. This can be modified to give a more personal image. Finally, the photograph is key. Avoid selfies, Saturday night photos, and beach photos. Your photo has to be professional, interesting, and must help you to stand out.
Buzzwords: just like any other social network, LinkedIn works with algorithms and buzzwords. This means that if an employer is looking for a certain profile, the buzzwords will connect your profile with the recruiter’s search. Buzzwords are those words used in the industry where you are looking for a job. Search engines acknowledge this words: including them in your headline, in the summary of your profile, and in your skills can connect you way faster to your new job.
Personalize: LinkedIn is not just another resume. It is a professional social profile. Therefore, not only should it include information, but it must also enhance your image among the professionals you want to connect to. Adding pictures, videos and personalized links is a good strategy to show just how you are at work. The profile should not only describe your professional interests, but it should also draw people’s attention so they may want to connect with you.
Privacy: Very important! If you are employed, and you are looking for new challenges, it is key to configure the necessary privacy adjustments to prevent everybody from been able to check your entire profile. In addition, you should deactivate automatic notifications that tell your contacts that you have made changes in your profile.
Activity: plenty of users think that magic will happen by only making a profile in LinkedIn: contacts will just show up, and your profile will be seen exactly by the people you want to connect to. The key is to really use the social network. Update it on a regular basis, work to build a network, make that network useful both in the online and in the offline world. That’s a job for individuals, not for profiles.
Organization: Just like resumes follow an order, the LinkedIn profile must prioritize information to fulfill its goal. Organizing information is key. A messy and inconstant profile shows a messy and inconstant person, and that limits your possibilities of professional development.
Personal branding: The world of social networks is a world where everybody builds their image and experiences as they want others to see them. So, as there is an employer branding, a brand that identifies an employer as such, there also is a personal brand, which we build through the image others have of us. Taking care of details in terms of writing and esthetics is key.
An old and wise saying claims there are no second chances to give a first good impression.
