The philanthropic area of Google, Google.org, will make a USD 50 million donation during the next two years, to finance non-profit organizations that used technology to train workers on skills needed for the future of work.
Automation and Artificial Intelligence, two areas in which Google stands out, are transforming the industry and the market labor. Google acknowledges that “as new technologies continue to develop, it is probable that over one third of jobs will demand skills that are rarely found in the current labor force”.
This new donation is added to a prior fund of USD 50 million that Google developed to help close the education gap; with the investment, initiatives of nine organizations from all over the world were developed. The company claims that both programs are a significant philanthropic initiative.
“Combined to our 50 million dollars effort to help close the global education gap, Google.org has made a total donation of USD 100 million to support education and economic opportunities, our greatest initiative so for”, says the company in its website.
Google points out that donations will help in three ways:
- Better connecting jobseekers and jobs. Supporting organizations that are promoting innovative approaches to connect workers and companies.
- Making sure that training is as effective and broad as possible. Financing researches to better understand what programs are more effective to make the largest possible number of people to get a job in the future.
- Improving the quality of work among workers with low wages. Jobs in services are the employment category that is growing faster. The National Alliance of Domestic Workers has a service called Alia that offers money to domestic workers through a small monthly fee.
The non-profit organizations selected will also receive volunteer technical advice from Google employees.
Last week, Google launched a new tool called Hire, an app that supports the recruitment process and is integrated with G Suite. The service keeps a record of job applicants and is specially designed for small companies.
