According to a report developed by Forbes Mexico, based on data from Cisco, there are 75 million youngsters in the world who do not have a job, and, by 2030, millennials will lead baby boomers for 22 million. There are four factors for which they are not hired.
There are around 75 million unemployed youngsters in the world, according to data from Cisco.
“In 2015 the talent gap among qualified IT staff in Mexico was over 115.000 people. These are jobs that could not be filled because there was a lack of adequate talent or candidates lacked necessary skills”, said Rebeca de la Vega, manager of Corporate Social Responsibility of Cisco Mexico, during the opening of the Campus Party.
De la Vega states that, in Mexico, 4 out of 10 jobs could not be filled because candidates lacked necessary qualifications and skills.
“Nowadays, a degree is not enough. We currently need to check that candidates have the proper set of skills to develop the tasks of the job. In addition, competition is getting harder.”
De la Vega pointed out four factors that lead to young people not getting a job:
“Talent must change. Universities, the industry and governments must become more and more attached, because, if we are not, we will be having graduates who will not be able to access the labour market”, highlighted De la Vega.
The number of jobs linked to the Internet of Everything (IOE) will grow 25% on an annual basis until 2020.
“The Internet of Everything has a business impact of over 19 billion dollars. It is an amazing opportunity for countries”, she said.
Companies are looking for people who do different things, just like young people look for companies that are different.
“The upcoming generation wants different things. Companies must create spaces and actions that have an impact on the community and pay closer attention to collaboration”, commented the manager.
“Certifications increase the chances of getting a job. Nowadays an IT company (information technology) that is looking for an employee, will prefer a person who has a certification”, said De la Vega.
Soft skills training is a must to increase young people’s employability. Mexico is no exception to the rule and is in need of public-private articulations to achieve sustainable development.
