Before the end of the year around 105,000 temporary workers will be hired, according to  joint research by Fenarserhtt (Trade Union of HR, Temporary Work, and Outsourcing Companies)  and Sindeprestem (Trade Union of Outsourced and Temporary Employment Services for São Paulo). However this is 35% less than the 163,000 hired in 2014.

Vander Morales, president of Fenarserhtt and Sindeprestem, states that the vast majority of companies will hire temporary workers to satisfy specific needs. He said that “temporary work is vital for the economy, particularly during a crisis, as it encourages and enables de the connection between jobseekers and vacancies.”

It is expected that 32,000 temporaries will be young people who have just entered the labour market. With a majority (72%) between 22 and 35 years old.  Just under half of contracts (48%) are expected to last between 61 to 90 days. It is also expected that 61% of contractors will have completed high school, 18% will have a technical education and 16% will be college graduates.

These staff cutbacks are the consequence of a serious economic and political crisis that has a direct impact on employment” explained Martin Padulla MD of staffingamericalatina, a business partner of Staffing Industry Analysts.

Unfortunately we are witnessing a prompt decrease of investments and a necessary adjustment of the macroeconomic policy that is pushing down domestic demand” he went on to say.

The unstable economic environment, in its third consecutive month of decline, according to Central Bank – has resulted in rising unemployment. Companies are wary about the direction of the economy and thus avoid hiring until there is some stability. However, despite the crisis, there are still those who need to replenish the workforce. Therefore, it is expected that nearly six thousand temporaries will be offered a permanent job after their contracts expire.

Maria Olinda Maran Longuini, Sindeprestem communications director, recommends that temporary work is seen as an opportunity to show the employer professional and personal qualities. “It’s the chance of a temporary stand out in the workplace, demonstrating potential to be an effective employee,” she explains.

In Brazil Industry and Retail are the main users of temporary work at the end of the year. Between the two industry will account for 67% (about 70,000) of contracting and retail 33% (around 34,000). Only in the State of São Paulo will retail have more than 17,000 temporary workers by the end of the year. For the Industry sector the positions that most need to be filled are: operational (39%); administration (24%); commercial (20%); technical (17%).
