It is not necessary to do an exhaustive review of a resume to learn whether a person fits the profile searched or not. Through a quick read you can detect certain words or phrases that may indicate certain aspects of the personality.

According to a recent study developed by the New College of Humanities  of London, United Kingdom, and based on a simple of 2 thousand recruiters, only 1/5 is patient enough to finish reading a resume. Most recruiters make a decision –either to consider or dismiss a resume- in less than 60 seconds.

Over 59% of recruiters hate coming up against mistakes, even though they are small mistakes such as grammar and typing errors. Nevertheless, what upsets them the most is reading clichés and common phrases, such as “I can work independently”, “I am a team player”, or “I work really hard”.

Another aspect which can be poorly seen is informality.  Concluding an e-mail using a very casual style or, even worse, if the candidates e-mail has a strange nickname, it can have a rather negative impact on the recruiter. Emojis are also poorly considered among recruiters: 4 out of 10 employers would discard a job application that contains these symbols.

The same study reveals that a surprising number of people who are looking for a job are willing to lie when writing down their resume. Among the main lies you can find adding years spent working in other jobs (1 out of 12 people), adding responsibilities to previous jobs (1 out of 20) or even lying about their hobbies (11%).

The study shows that these are the 10 phrases recruiters hate the most:

  1. “I work hard”
    2. “I work well under pressure”
    3. “I work independently”
    4. “I am very good at solving problems”
    5. “I am a good team player”
    6. “I am proactive”
    7. “I am a good communicator”
    8. “I am a good listener”
    9. “My writing skills are excellent”
    10. “I am very enthusiast”

Undoubtedly, these are tips to consider when reviewing a resume. You must not forget that it is an introduction letter that must be representative and, most importantly, real.
