The textile industry has suggested the government to implement flexible labour schemes, enabling industries to operate 14 to 16 hours long working days.
The textile industry of El Salvador needs to approach international standards. Therefore, businessmen from this sector have requested the government to establish more flexible schemes to operate more hours per day.
The proposal implies establishing more modern labour schemes, following the example of other markets, explained Patricia Figueroa, executive director of the Chamber of the Textile Industry of El Salvador.
The idea is that a scheme in which different employees work, will enable plants to be more productive by implementing longer working days and making a better use of resources.
In labour markets with high levels of informality, such as El Salvador, it is necessary to guarantee that flexibility comes together with protection for workers.
Promoting formal work, implementing proper audit and ratifying ILO’s Convention 181 on Private Employment Agencies would make this country’s labour market more dynamic and modern. This set of measures shall lower labour informality and increase flexibility for companies and security for workers.
