On 5-7 September, the ILO held in Geneva a tripartite meeting of experts to discuss and adopt guiding principles and operational guidelines for governments and enterprises to ensure and uphold fair recruitment practices.
Sandro Pettineo (Ciett Global Public Affairs Manager) represented the ethical recruitment industry at the meeting and in his opening statement stressed the need to adopt appropriate regulation based on ILO Convention No. 181 to promote the development of the ethical recruitment industry and eliminate the rogue operators.
Ciett took part as observer in the employers’ delegation, and closely cooperated with the IOE to ensure that the principles and guidelines on fair recruitment addressed the challenges of the ethical agencies and businesses during the recruitment and employment process.
The experts agreed on the non-binding guidelines that are based on the international labour standards and on fundamental principles and rights at work and will seek to support governments, businesses and other stakeholders in promoting and fostering fair recruitment.
The guidelines will be submitted to the Governing Body of the ILO for adoption and will serve to feed into the discussion on migration next year at the International Labour Conference.
